Last month, New Zealand celebrated Bee Awareness Month, shedding light on the incredible contributions of bees to our ecosystems and agriculture. This celebration is especially significant for us at Golden Bay Fruit as we gear up for the spring season in our apple orchards. As the blossoms develop, the bees will be diligently pollinating our apple trees, ensuring a bountiful harvest.
The Apple-Bee Partnership
Bees are the unsung heroes of apple production. These tiny pollinators play a pivotal role in the orchards. Apples, like many other fruits, depend on pollinators for reproduction. Bees, particularly honeybees and wild bee species, are vital for apple pollination. They visit apple blossoms in search of nectar and inadvertently transfer pollen from one blossom to another. This process is crucial for fertilisation and the development of fruit.
Adequate pollination also leads to higher fruit yields and better-quality apples, making them more appealing to consumers.

Last summer, we had the privilege of taking a tour around their picturesque site in Golden Bay, where we got to see where the bees reside when they’re not in our orchards. You can truly understand where the term ‘busy bee’ comes from, as when they’re not pollinating our orchards, they’re hard at work creating delicious honey.
